Super8 is built around 8 events (4 track & 4 field events) and 2 relays. Teams are made up of 8 boys & 8 girls with each athlete doing one track event, one field event and a relay. They score points in their respective disciplines that go towards their individual and team score. For more details on scoring: www.super8.org.uk/

South London Athletics Network 2013 Super 8 League.

The first fixture of the South London Athletics Network 2013 Super 8 athletics League took place at Battersea Park on Sunday July 28th the home track of Belgrave Harriers. Super 8, is based around 8 events (4 track & 4 field) and 1 relay. Teams are made up of 8 boys & 8 girls with each athlete doing at least one track event, one field event and a relay.

82 athletes competed on the morning from 3 clubs within the network. It was great to see many athletes experiencing competition for the first time.  Herne Hill Harriers as usual brought a strong team led by Steve Bosley and were looking good to continue their dominance from the last 2 years in the Under 13’s competition. Belgrave Harriers though were not to be denied on home turf. Despite a close team competition Belgrave prevailed with some outstanding individual performances. This was a great result that reinforces the work being put in to rejuvenate the Belgrave Junior section. Key to the success has been the enthusiasm showed by junior coaches at Battersea Park led by Charlie Dickenson, Chris Husbands and Andrea Lynch. Not only are they producing talented athletes but they have been successful in engaging the parents to help out as officials and in Sian Goodlad’s case a team manager.  Hercules Wimbledon AC despite finishing 3rd on the day were rewarded for bringing a strong squad with many individual winners and a host of Pb’s

In the Under 15’s competition Herne Hill Harriers were not to be denied and showed the class that has made them one of the best junior clubs in the country. They were so dominated that their B team were also able to grab 2nd place. Belgrave were able to demonstrate the progress they have made by snatching 3rd place a year on from not being able to field a team in this fixture. This included many individual winners.

Individual competition

The South London Athletics Network Super 8 competition also rewards outstanding individual performance. This is done by the athletes scoring points not only for their teams but by taking the best score from an athlete’s track event and the best score from the their field event. The best individual’s scores are listed below.

The Under 15 competition provided the same individual winner as last year. Feysal Nadew (Herne Hill Harriers) proving again how dominant he is in this format. Fresh from his first sub 2 minutes clocking the day before at the Herne Hill Harriers open meeting today he was content to save his energy for the high jump by completing unusual but highly effective double winning the 800 in 2-09.9 and winning the high jump 1m 60cm.  Jeevonni McFlarane (Herne Hill Harriers) impressive individual score was greatly enhanced by having the 3rd fastest 100m time in a very competitive 100m race with 12.5secs combined with a 1m 40cm high jump. Tom Reid from host club Belgrave Harriers narrowly missed winning the 100m with 12.2secs and backed this up with a 2nd place in the shot with 8m 03cm.

The girls Under 15’s competition was no less competitive with Breagha Campbell coming out on top with a score of 149 points on the back of a very impressive 12.9 secs in the 75m Hurdles and a superb 4m 98cm Long Jump. Imani Reid took second place with a 1m45 high jump and a 14.5 100m time. She was closely followed by Carla Doukrou (Belgrave Harriers) and like Avise Hussein in the under 13’s competition in her 3rd year of competing in SLAN Super 8 competitions. Carla scored an impressive win in the 200m with a 28.7 clocking and backed this up with a long Jump of 4m36cm.

There were some fantastic individual performances in the Under 13 competition. Belgrave dominated the individual points competition taking 5 of the 6 podium places. Harry Grindle (Belgrave Harriers) and Richard Lee M (Belgrave Harriers) lead the way in the boys competition with only 1 point separating them in the final analysis. Harry scored an impressive victor in the 100m with a 13.1 clocking and backed this up with 2nd place in the long jump with 4m46cm. First place in the long jump went to Harry’s rival in the individual competition Richard Lee M with an excellent 4m62cm. Richard backed this up with a 28.3 clocking in the 2OOM which gave him 66points but left him frustratingly 1 point shy of Harry’s total. Although Hecules Wimbledon did not have anyone feature in the individual points competition they did have a first place in the 70m Hurdles through Hannah Bond and they took 2nd and 3rd in the 800m through Rebekah Riches & Freya Deeks.

In the girls competition Avise Hussein (Belgrave Harriers) came out on top with an individual score of 118 points. Her performances included a 7m 29cm Shot Putt and a super-fast 14.1 secs in the 100meters.

Although Hecules Wimbledon did not have anyone feature in the individual points competition they did have a first place in the 70m Hurdles through Hannah Bond and they took 2nd and 3rd in the 800m through Rebekah Riches & Freya Deeks.

Tooting Bec – The Final Fixture

The final fixture of the South London Athletics Network 2012 Super 8 athletics League took place at Tooting Bec on Sunday September 16th the home track of Herne Hill Harriers. Super8 Athletics is built around 8 events (4 track & 4 field) and 2 relays. Teams are made up of 8 boys & 8 girls with each athlete doing at least one track event, one field event and a relay.

107 athletes competed from 4 clubs within the network. It what has become a regular feature of this competition many of the athletes were experiencing organised competition for the first time.  Herne Hill Harriers took advantage of home advantage with a strong display in both team competitions. They did not have it all their own way though, with strong team performances from Belgrave Harriers in the Under 15’s competition and Sutton & District in the Under 13’s competition keeping pace with Herne Hill Harriers for most of the competition.

In the end though Herne Hill proved too strong and completed a dominated season for them in the league which can only bode well for their squad entering the winter Sportshall and Cross Country competitions.

South London Athletics Network 2012 Super 8 Athletics League

Sutton Arena – The 2nd Fixture

The second fixture of the South London Athletics Network 2012 Super 8 athletics League took place at Sutton Arena on Sunday August 19th the home track of Sutton & District AC. Super8 Athletics is built around 8 events (4 track & 4 field) and 2 relays. Teams are made up of 8 boys & 8 girls with each athlete doing at least one track event, one field event and a relay.

82 athletes competed from 4 clubs within the network, it what has become a regular feature of this competition many of the athletes were experiencing organised competition for the first time.  Herne Hill Harriers as always brought a strong team and were looking good to make amends for missing out on the Under 13’s team honors in the first fixture at Battersea Park. They were denied though by an inspired display by host club Sutton & District AC who prevailed by just 40 points. It was a real team effort with their points evenly spread amongst their team members. South London Harriers finished a strong 3rd and as always were well team managed on the day by tireless Anne Roden who even found time to officiate the Long Jump competition.

In the Under 15’s competition Herne Hill Harriers once again dominated. Over the 2 years of the competition they remain unbeaten. They simply dominated most of the events with host club Sutton & District in a distant 2nd.

The final fixture of the South London Athletics Network took place at Sutton Arena on Wednesday July 13th the home of Sutton & District AC. Super8, is built around 8 events (4 track & 4 field) and 2 relays. Teams are made up of 8 boys & 8 girls with each athlete doing one track event, one field event and a relay.

110 athletes competed on the night from all 6 clubs within the network. It was great to see so many athletes experiencing competition for the first time. After Herne Hill Harriers dominance in the first fixture and South London Harriers dominance in the second fixture the third fixture promised to be a hard fought battle. We were not to be disappointed! South London Harriers prevailed in the under 15 competition and their win on the night resulted in them taking the overall league title. The home team Sutton broke the South London/Herne Hill cartel by stealing 2nd on the night on the back of a strong overall team performance.

Eventually Herne Hill prevailed on the night to reverse their defeat in the under 15 competition. By winning on the night they also took the overall league title.  Some consistent performances from Belgrave Harriers over the 3 meetings lead to them securing 3rd place overall.
