South London Athletics Network take a
record 3 teams for the National Sportshall final
The South London Athletics Network
fielded a record 3 teams in the National Sportshall final at the
NEC Brimingham on Sunday April 7th. An impressive achievement
when you consider only the county of Avon fielded more teams.
Pride of place went to the Under 15 boys
who finished a very competitive 9th place in the National final.
They were led by Ismail Abdul-Karim (Herne Hill Harriers) who
scored a wonderful victory in the 2 lap race in a time of 20.7
seconds. He was backed up by Garfield Francis (HHH) and Kyle
Cranston (HHH) who scored top ten finishes in the standing
triple jump and standing long jump respectively. They rounded of
their competition with a hard fought 4th place in the 4x2lap
relay.
The Under 13 girls competed in a highly
competitive competition as you would expect in a national final.
Although as a team they struggled to stay with some of the
leading counties in the country there was some outstanding
individual performances. Pride of place goes to Denisha Marshall
Brown (Herne Hill Harriers) in winning the shot put with 12m
44cm and then backing this up with 3rd place in the 2lap race
with 22.4 seconds. The girls’ team were further aided by top ten
places from Ore Adamson (Herne Hill Harriers) in the Standing
Long jump and Suzanne Bukasa Mateba, (Herne Hill Harriers) in
the 4 lap race.
The Under 13 boys found the competition
equally as tough as the girls. But just like the girls they did
produce some outstanding individual performances. None more so
than Ade Adirean who scored an outstanding victory in the 2 lap
race recording a time of 21.4 seconds and followed this up with
a 6th place finish in the shot put with 10m 37cm. Some of the
other highlights included Dejean Marshall Brown (Herne Hill
Harriers) finishing 3rd in the Shot despite still recovering
from a fractured hip with 11m 74cm, , Kingsley Ezeh (Herne Hill
Harriers) finishing 6th in the 6 lap race and Cadell Peter
finishing 9th in the Standing Triple Jump.
The Network teams were superbly managed
on the day by Steve Bosley (Herne Hill Harriers) and Anne Roden
(South London Harriers). They were instrumental in selecting the
teams and arranging the travel arrangements to Birmingham. Steve
managed all this while also managing a Surrey Under 15 boys team
on the day! The South London Athletics Network teams were made
up from athletes from South London Harriers, Herne Hill Harriers
and Belgrave Harriers.

The Under 15 girls could not
quite make it a clean sweep for the South London Athletics
Network on the day but it was not for the lack effort. They
simply came up against an outstanding Newham team that will
prove a match for most teams at the National final. Some of the
outstanding performances from the Network came from Holly Clark
(South London Harriers) winning the Speed Bounce with 77
bounces, Julia Doukrou (Belgrave Harriers) the only double
winner from the Network coming equal 1st in the
Vertical Jump with 55cm and winning the 4 lap race with 48.6secs

The Network would like to
extend a special thank you to the Network team managers on the
day for bringing all the athletes together and coordinating on
the day. They were Steve Bosley (Herne Hill Harriers) who only
the day before managed Surrey in winning the under 15 South East
boys title and qualifying them for the National Final. Come the
National final Steve will have split loyalties! Anne Roden
(South London Harriers) who worked tirelessly right up to the
morning of the event with Steve to make sure the Network fielded
full teams in all 4 competitions. Sian Goolad and Andrea Lynch (Belgrave
Harriers) who not only managed the Belgrave Athletes but helped
officiate on the day.

South London
Athletics Network takes on the country at the National
Sportshall Final.
On
Sunday April 3rd 2012
The South London Athletics Network
took an under 15 boys and an under 15 girls team to the National
Sportshall final at the NEC in Birmingham. Daniel Ghosh from
Sutton and District AC also joined our team to compete in the
individual competition.
For
many of the athletes this was their first taste of a National
competition and it proved a real baptism of fire! The
competition as you would expect was fierce with the best teams
from around the country including Wales and Northern Ireland
taking part. The Under 15 boys team competed hard all afternoon
to finish 11th, with the girls team combining to
finish 12th.
The
outstanding performer of the day was Daniel Ghosh who dominated
the Individual competition to win with 293 points. He was a
clear winner of the Shot with 15m 06cm (3rd
on the all time Sportshall list) He again finished top of
the pile in the standing Triple Long jump in 9m 15cm (3rd
on the all time list Sportshall)
His only defeat came in the 2 lap race where he still finished
a respectable 3rd in 20.9 just 0.3 behind the winner.
He follows in the footsteps of Mark Lewis Francis and Kelly
Sotherton as overall winners of the Sportshall final. Please see
a picture of Daniel receiving his award from Louise Hazel
Commonwealth Heptathlon Champion from Delhi.
We
had some outstanding individual performances from the South
London team. On the boys team Reece Young (South London
Harriers) finished an excellent 6th in the standing
long jump with 2m 69cm. He was backed up by Aaron Wells (South
London Harriers) who finished 12th in the speed
bounce. On the girls team Francesca Mclymont (South London
Harriers) finished 10th in the Vertical Jump with
55cm and Tessa Billups (South London Harriers) finished 10th
in the speed bounce.
Throughout the Sportshall season 70 athletes from 4 different
clubs (Hercules Wimbledon, Sutton and District, Herne Hill
Harriers and South London Harriers) within the Network have
competed in the London Regional and National Final. The Network
will build upon this for next season and continue to develop
competition opportunities for athletes in the under 11, 13 and
15 age group.
South London Athletics
Network Qualifies for National Final

The South London Athletics Network
competed with great success in the Aviva Sportshall Regional
Final at Crystal Palace on Saturday 12 February 2011. The
Network fielded 4 full teams in the Under 13 boys and girls
section as well as the Under 15 boys and girls sections. In
total over 30 athletes competed for the Network from 3 clubs,
Hercules Wimbledon, Herne Hill Harriers and South London
Harriers.
The girls and boys under 15 teams
competed with great distinction beating The Newham Network into
second place in both competitions to qualify for the National
Sportshall final on April 3rd in Birmingham. They were lead by
some excellent individual performances.
The Under 15 boys were lead by Kieran
Clarke from South London Harriers who won the individual
competition with 146 points. He was backed up by some superb
performances from Aaron Wells South London Harriers and Devonte
Casely Hayford Hercules Wimbledon who finished equal second in
the individual competition to lay the foundations for the team
win. Ben Myburgh and Brett Parry completed the team line up. The
team was particularly grateful to Ben who helped out in the
running events even though he is a specialist thrower!
The Under 15 girls fought hard in a
tight competition with the Newham Athletics Network. The
competition came down to the final relay of the day, the
4x2laps. Fortunately the South London Network prevailed in a
competitive contest. In a truly team effort the team was made up
of Rhianna Madden-Hansle, Francesca Mclymont, Chanel Christie
Mawa Diaby, Samantha Soloman and Kayane Cornwall from the South
London Harriers and Herne Hill Harriers Clubs. Rhianna and
Francesca were particularly impressive finishing second and
third in the individual competition. Please see a picture of the
winning girl’s team.
The under 13 girls were involved in a
tight contest with the Newham Network all afternoon. In the end
they just lost out but they competed with great distinction with
some great experience gained. Many of the girls have 1 to 3
years still left in the age group and they can look forward to
continued success in the future. Kassa Sealy from Herne Hill
Harriers was the star performer of the day winning the vertical
jump with 53 centimetres.
The under 13 boys were enthusiastic
competitors gaining many places amongst the individual medals.
They came up against a very strong Newham team who will go onto
the National finals as one of the favorites. It was great to see
the team come together and compete for each other from Herne
Hill, Hercules Wimbledon and South London Harriers. Just like
the Under 13 girls they gained some valuable experience for when
they return next year.
